A Surprise Proposal at Shell Beach on the Sonoma Coast

Abhi & Elodia

An hour and a half north of San Francisco, past Bodega Bay and just shy of the little river town of Jenner, the Sonoma Coast turns properly dramatic — long ribbons of coastline, wild bluffs, and sea stacks rising out of the surf. That's where you'll find Shell Beach, one of the North Bay's most beautiful and least crowded proposal spots.
The proposal happened up on the blufftop above the beach, with a view that runs for miles down the coast — spectacular rock formations, headlands stacking into the haze, the whole Sonoma Coast laid out as the backdrop. It was everything a surprise should be: completely unexpected, deeply emotional, and witnessed by exactly one very excited dog (yes, their pup was part of the plan — and part of the photos).
Afterward we took the trail down to Shell Beach itself and just played: waves, sand, the dog sprinting victory laps, the newly engaged couple laughing at everything. The nearby Jenner Headlands make this stretch even more special — gorgeous, quietly under-the-radar, and wide open compared to the busier beaches further south.
If you're thinking about a proposal or engagement session around Bodega Bay, Jenner, or anywhere on the Sonoma Coast, this coastline is one of my favorite secrets in Northern California — and I'd love to plan yours here.
