A Surprise Proposal on Whale Peak — Big Sur Coast

Lucas & Kayla

Of all the surprise proposals I've photographed, this one required the most precise planning — because at Whale Peak, deep in Garrapata State Park on the Big Sur coast, there is no cell signal. No "I'm 5 minutes away" texts. No live coordination. Everything had to be planned perfectly in advance, or not at all.
So Lucas and I built the whole operation beforehand: I sent him digital instructions with maps, the exact route, and marked-up photos showing precisely where to stand at the summit, which direction to face, and how the moment would unfold. On the day, I was already up at Soberanes Point, playing the part of a random photographer shooting the coastline. It worked completely — even when she looked right at me, she was certain I was just another visitor with a camera.
Then, on the peak itself — a summit with a full 360° view of the Big Sur coastline, the Santa Lucia ridgelines, and the endless Pacific — Lucas got down on one knee. It was windy, emotional, tearful, and the wind honestly made it better: hair flying, dress flapping, the whole coast roaring its approval.
Afterward we ran down the hill toward the ocean, exploring the rocky coastline and wildflowers of Garrapata, and met the sunset at the water. If you're dreaming of a Big Sur proposal, this is what's possible — and the tricky logistics are exactly what I'm for.
