A Surprise Proposal at Redwoods Grove

Isha & Connor

Planning a surprise proposal in a popular Bay Area spot requires a photographer who can double as an undercover actor lol.
A Sunday evening at Redwood Grove is usually bustling with visitors. Connor and I had mapped out the exact location down to the tree trunk, but as the clock ticked toward our designated meeting time, a small crowd had lingered right in our primary frame. I quietly guided park visitors along without giving away the secret, guarding the clearing so the moment would stay intimate.
When Connor and Isha walked into view, the sheer number of people nearby made a sudden drop to one knee feel tricky. I had to pivot on the spot to ensure Isha wouldn't suspect a thing.
I stepped into their path, camera in hand, looking visibly defeated:
"Excuse me, are you Michael and Anna?"
"No, we're not," they replied, confused.
"I've been standing here for nearly twenty minutes waiting for clients who look just like you, and it looks like they're a no-show. There are so many shoots happening today, and I really don't want to drive home empty-handed... would you two mind letting me take a quick picture of you instead?"
My cover story was so convincing that even Connor gave me a second look, wondering for a split second if I was actually an upset stranger or his hired photographer!
I positioned them side by side, instructed Isha to look slightly toward the trees for "the shot," and that was Connor's cue. The moment he dropped to one knee and called her name, the disbelief and raw emotion took over. There were happy tears, quiet embraces, and relief as Isha realized the entire interaction was orchestrated just for her.
As the sun sank behind the canopy, the weekend crowds emptied out, leaving us with the quiet cathedral of the redwoods to wander, breathe, and document their very first moments as an engaged couple.
