If you’re looking for a place that feels like the edge of the world, you have to head north. While everyone else is fighting for a parking spot at the Golden Gate, the real magic is happening along the rugged cliffs of Mendocino County and the quiet, wind-swept coves of Bodega Bay.

When you’re planning a moment as significant as a proposal or an engagement session, the last thing you want is a crowd of tourists in the background of your memories (and your photos). You want a place that feels like it belongs only to the two of you.

As a photographer, I’ve scouted the most rugged, cinematic corners of the Mendocino Coast and Bodega Bay. These aren't just photo backdrops; they are true destination locations—private, majestic, and worth the drive. Here are my top picks for a photoshoot that feels like a true getaway.

The Point Arena Lighthouse: A Majestic Retreat

This is arguably the most dramatic peninsula in Northern California, offering a massive variety of landscapes in one single spot.

The Vibe: You get the iconic white lighthouse paired with endless views of the Pacific on one side and rolling open fields and hills on the other. It is incredibly private and feels like a scene from a movie.

The Pro Insider Tip: You can actually book a room at the Point Arena Lighthouse. They have a lodge on-site that is absolutely gorgeous. Imagine planning a weekend trip, staying at the station, and proposing right there in the fields overlooking the ocean. It’s a full-immersion experience that turns a photoshoot into a lifelong memory.

Peaked Hill: The 360° Panorama

If you want to feel like you’re standing on top of the world, this is the spot. Located in the Jenner Headlands, it’s the definition of "epic."

The Selling Point: It offers a true 360-degree view of the coastline and the hills. The best part? It only takes a quick 2-minute walk from the parking to get to the very top.

The Vibe: It can get a bit windy up there, which actually adds a beautiful, wind-swept movement to your photos. I always recommend grabbing a cute additional sweater for this one—it keeps you cozy and adds a stylish layer to your gallery.

Shell Beach: The Best of Both Worlds

Just three minutes down the road from Peaked Hill, Shell Beach is a must-visit for couples who want variety without the travel time.

The Vibe: It offers a cinematic view of the rugged coastline that this area is famous for.

The Advantage: The beauty of Shell Beach is that you get the best of both worlds. There are dramatic bluffs overlooking the water, and just a short walk down tehre is a direct access to the beach itself. Getting two completely different "looks" in the same photoshoot is a huge win.

Gleason Beach Overlook: The "Hidden" Masterpiece

I’m going to be honest: this spot is absolutely stunning. It is hands-down one of the most beautiful coastal views I have ever seen.

The Location: It’s right off the road, which makes it incredibly accessible. While the road is nearby, it’s usually quiet and doesn't feel busy at all.

The Setup: There are a couple of specific spots where you can get closer to the edge and further from the road, making it feel like you are the only two people left on the coast. If you want a "step-out-of-the-car-and-into-a-dream" moment, this is it.

Point Killy: The Dramatic Cliffside Edge

If you want the maximum "wow" factor with the minimum effort, Point Killy is your spot. It is located incredibly close to the town of Mendocino, making it the perfect location if you have dinner reservations right after your session.

The Vibe: This is for the couple that wants to feel like they are standing on the very edge of the world. It features a dramatic, jagged cliffside that drops straight into the churning blue water below.

The Selling Point: It is "super duper" private. Unlike the main trails in Mendocino Headlands State Park where you might run into hikers, Point Killy feels like a secret.

Accessibility: It’s an easy 1-minute walk from where you park. You get all the drama without the sweat.

Whether it’s the "above the world" feeling of Peaked Hill or the historic romance of staying overnight at Point Arena, these locations offer a level of privacy you just can't find closer to the city.
